Survival Hunter in WoW Midnight: Playstyle, Lore & Who It Suits

How It Feels

Survival is the Hunter who prefers to get hands-on. Instead of shooting from afar, you leap to the enemy with Harpoon, stab with your spear and throw bombs that set packs on fire. Your pet fights shoulder to shoulder with you.

That gives the spec a feel of its own: less shooting range, more fight for survival in the wild. Survival is a bit unusual and less common than the other Hunters, but it has a loyal fan base.

How Survival Works

Survival uses Focus but fights in melee:

Close in: Harpoon pulls you to the enemy and roots them briefly.
Build Focus: Kill Command sends your pet at the target and generates Focus.
Spend Focus: Raptor Strike is your main melee attack.
Bombs: Wildfire Bomb explodes in a cone and burns enemies over time. It deals extra damage to the main target.
Burst window: Coordinated Assault has you and your pet attack together and strengthens your bond, so both deal more damage afterward.

Raptor Strike: your main attack, a vicious slash with your weapon.
Wildfire Bomb: a bomb that explodes in a cone and sets enemies on fire.
Kill Command: your pet attacks and generates Focus.
Harpoon: pulls you to the enemy and roots them briefly.
Coordinated Assault: you and your pet charge together and deal more damage afterward.
Freezing Trap: a trap that incapacitates the first enemy to step on it.

Lore: Azeroth's Survivalists

Survival draws on the Hunters who live not in castles but in the wild: trappers, trackers and warriors who make do with what the land gives them. Among the Zandalari and the jungle trolls of Stranglethorn, the spear has always been the weapon of the hunt, among the Tauren the polearm.

In Legion, Survival Hunters fought with Talonclaw, the legendary Spear of the Wild Gods. That closeness to the wild gods, the ancients of Azeroth, still suits the spec today.

Frequently asked questions

Is Survival Hunter melee?

Yes. Survival is the only melee Hunter spec. You fight with a polearm or spear, pull yourself to enemies with Harpoon and throw bombs at close range. Your pet fights right at your side.

Is Survival good for beginners?

Medium. The loop is understandable, but you manage Focus, bombs and your pet at the same time. If you want an easier Hunter, start with Beast Mastery. If you specifically want an unusual melee, Survival has a personality of its own.

Is Survival Hunter good solo?

Yes. Your pet helps tank, bombs hit whole groups, and Aspect of the Turtle and traps give you good emergency tools. You are closer to the action than the other Hunters, though.

Both are agile melee fighters in medium armor. The Hunter wears mail, has a pet and bombs and feels like the wild. The Rogue works with stealth, combo points and poisons or shadows. If you like company on the battlefield, you lean toward the Hunter.
