Playstyle

Priest: Priestess with braided hair in white and gold armor

The Priest is the classic healer of Azeroth, but it can just as easily choose the dark side. Wearing cloth, it stands at the back of the group and keeps everyone alive with heals and shields, or it wears enemies down with shadow magic.

Priests bring unique group tools: Leap of Faith pulls an ally out of danger, Mass Dispel removes effects from many targets, and Power Word: Fortitude is a buff every group wants.

Background and lore

Priests serve the Light, the moon goddess Elune or the shadows. Humans and dwarves follow the Church of the Holy Light, night elf priestesses like Tyrande Whisperwind pray to Elune, and the Forsaken have their own, darker faith. The best known priest is Anduin Wrynn, the young King of Stormwind, who would rather heal than fight. Shadow priests show that faith can also lead into the Void.

Specializations

Discipline

Discipline heals in an unusual way: Power Word: Shield prevents damage before it happens, and through Atonement damage to enemies turns into healing for the group. So you heal by attacking. It is a mindset of its own that many players love. PvP lists often call Discipline beginner friendly.

Signature abilities: Penance, Power Word: Radiance

Holy

Holy is the classic healer: big heals, area healing and strong emergency buttons when things get tight. The playstyle is reactive and easy to follow. Beginner guides often name Holy Priest a good first healer.

Signature abilities: Holy Word: Serenity, Guardian Spirit, Divine Hymn

Shadow

Shadow is the priest who got too close to the Void. You apply damage over time, build up Insanity and then unleash tentacles and dark visions. Grim, atmospheric and moderately demanding.

Signature abilities: Mind Flay, Vampiric Touch, Shadow Word: Pain

Who is the Priest for?

A good fit if you …

  • want to heal and try two very different healing specs,
  • like supporting your group and saving teammates,
  • are drawn to shadow magic more than light and order.

Not ideal if you …

  • play a lot of solo content and want to be sturdy, since the Priest is fragile in cloth,
  • want to fight in melee.

Strengths and weaknesses

As a healer, the Priest is always welcome in groups, and Discipline and Holy give you two playstyles in one class. Leveling and solo play are slower and riskier, and Shadow is the most comfortable spec for that.
