Playstyle

Evoker: Golden dragon against a blue sky

The Evoker is WoW's newest class and closely tied to the draconic Dracthyr. It wields the magic of the dragonflights: fire, life, time and dreams. In mail armor it fights at mid-range, about 25 yards, closer than other casters.

Its standout feature is empowered spells: you hold the key, charge the spell through several stages and release it at the right moment. Besides Mana, the Evoker uses Essence as a resource. With Soar and Hover it is also very mobile.

Background and lore

Evokers are dracthyr, a draconic race created by the black Dragon Aspect Neltharion before he became Deathwing. They were sealed away for ages and only awakened in Dragonflight. Evokers combine the magic of all five dragonflights: red for life and fire, blue for magic, green for the Dream, bronze for time and black for earth. They fight at mid range and can charge up spells to empower them.

Specializations

Devastation

Devastation is the damage evoker with red and blue dragon magic: Fire Breath, Disintegrate and empowered spells that hit whole groups. Short range, lots of burst and a strong dragon feel. Some guides list Devastation among the beginner friendly ranged specs.

Signature abilities: Eternity Surge, Dragonrage

Preservation

Preservation heals with green Dream magic and bronze time magic. Empowered heals and Echoes double up your spells, and time spells can even undo damage. A creative healer for everyone who likes to experiment.

Signature abilities: Dream Breath, Echo

Augmentation

Augmentation is special: a damage specialization with black and bronze magic that mostly makes other players stronger. Its contribution often barely shows on the damage meter. Perfect if you like pulling strings in the background, but demanding in groups.

Signature abilities: Ebon Might, Prescience, Breath of Eons

Who is the Evoker for?

A good fit if you …

  • are fascinated by dragons and time magic,
  • want a fresh casting style with charge-up spells,
  • want to choose between damage, healing and support.

Not ideal if you …

  • want to tank, since the Evoker has no tank spec,
  • are used to the full range of classic casters and don't want to get closer.

Strengths and weaknesses

The Evoker plays unlike any other class, and Augmentation offers a role that doesn't exist anywhere else. Its shorter range demands good positioning, though, and empowered spells take some getting used to.
