How It Feels
Retribution is the sword of the Light. You charge in with a huge two-handed weapon, bring down waves of holy Light on your enemies and, at your strongest, spread golden wings. It feels direct and weighty: every big hit looks and feels like it matters.
At the same time, Retribution is one of the most forgiving damage specs in the game. You wear plate, heal yourself on the side and have Divine Shield, a button that makes you immune for a few seconds. That makes the Retribution Paladin a favorite of solo players and returning players alike.
How Retribution Works
The heart of the spec is Holy Power, a resource with up to five points. The loop is simple:
- Build: generators like Blade of Justice and Judgment build Holy Power. Most have a short cooldown, so you press them whenever they are ready.
- Spend: with three or more points you use a finisher. Against one target that is Templar's Verdict, against groups Divine Storm.
- Burst window: Avenging Wrath makes you much stronger for a while. During it you want to spend as much Holy Power as possible.
If you have played a Rogue or Druid with combo points, you will recognize the idea right away, just without energy management. The skill lies in never wasting Holy Power and never leaving cooldowns unused.
Key Abilities
- Blade of Justice: your main generator, a ranged blade of Light that builds Holy Power.
- Judgment: strikes the enemy with Light, builds Holy Power and makes the target take more damage from your next finisher.
- Templar's Verdict: the classic single-target finisher, a mighty strike that spends Holy Power.
- Divine Storm: the area finisher, a whirl of Light that hits all nearby enemies.
- Wake of Ashes: a wave of holy ash that hits enemies in a cone and generates a lot of Holy Power at once.
- Avenging Wrath: the Paladin's signature, golden wings and much more damage for a few seconds.
- Word of Glory: a heal that spends Holy Power instead of dealing damage, perfect when things get tight.
Lore: The Sword of the Light
Paladins are holy warriors who wield the Light not only to heal but as a weapon. The first order, the Knights of the Silver Hand, was founded during the Second War by Archbishop Alonsus Faol and led by Uther the Lightbringer. Retribution embodies the side of the order that actively hunts evil: Paladins like Tirion Fordring, who rode against the Lich King with the purified Ashbringer.
The spec fits WoW Midnight especially well, because the expansion returns to Quel'Thalas. That is home to the Blood Knights, the Blood Elf Paladins led by Lady Liadrin. They once drew the Light by force from a captive naaru and had to earn their place in the Light again. Tauren Sunwalkers, Zandalari Paladins and the Lightforged Draenei bring their own views of the Light as well.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
- easy to understand build-and-spend loop,
- very sturdy for a damage dealer: plate, self-healing, Divine Shield,
- strong against groups thanks to Divine Storm,
- brings useful group tools such as blessings and Lay on Hands.
Weaknesses
- pure melee, so enemies that move a lot cost you damage,
- a lot depends on cooldowns: missing them costs noticeable damage,
- little control over distance, ranged enemies can kite you.
Who Is the Retribution Paladin For?
A good fit if you …
- want a heavy-hitting melee spec with a clear playstyle,
- like to play solo and rarely want to die,
- love the fantasy of a holy knight with golden wings.
Probably not if you …
- prefer fighting from range,
- want a spec with lots of resources and complex sequences that challenges you for a long time.
Retribution, Holy or Protection?
All three Paladin specs share plate armor and emergency buttons. Holy heals in the thick of combat and channels healing to the tank through Beacon of Light. Protection tanks with a shield and is one of the most beginner friendly tanks. Retribution is the right choice if you want to deal damage and still stand your ground.
