How It Feels
Frost is the controlled, cool-headed Mage. Your enemies slow down, freeze and finally shatter under your Ice Lances. You set the pace of the fight, not them. That gives Frost a very calm, safe feel, especially when you play alone.
Visually Frost is clean and elegant: ice shards, swirling orbs of frost and blizzards that freeze whole groups. The important effects are easy to read, so you learn the spec quickly.
How Frost Works
The Frost Mage uses mana and builds Freezing stacks:
- Basic spell: Frostbolt deals damage and slows your target.
- Build stacks: Flurry hits the target several times and applies stacks of Freezing.
- Shatter: Ice Lance is a quick shard that shatters four stacks of Freezing and deals extra damage.
- Groups: Frozen Orb rolls through enemies and follows your target, Blizzard covers a whole area.
- Icy Veins: your big cooldown makes you faster and stronger.
Key Abilities
- Frostbolt: your basic spell, damage and a slow.
- Flurry: a flurry of ice that builds Freezing stacks.
- Ice Lance: a quick ice shard that shatters Freezing stacks.
- Frozen Orb: an orb of ice that rolls through enemies.
- Blizzard: ice shards rain on an area and slow enemies.
- Icy Veins: more haste and spell damage for a while.
- Frost Nova: roots all enemies near you in ice.
Lore: Jaina Proudmoore
No name is as closely tied to frost magic as Jaina Proudmoore. The apprentice of Archmage Antonidas became the most powerful sorceress of her time, founded Theramore and later led the fleet of Kul Tiras. Her icy magic is as iconic as her eventful story.
In Legion, Frost Mages chose the staff Ebonchill as their artifact weapon. Frost is the magic of discipline: cold, calculated and unstoppable.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
- the most approachable Mage spec,
- lots of control through slows and roots,
- very safe solo,
- easy-to-read effects and a clear rhythm.
Weaknesses
- cloth, vulnerable to direct hits,
- many spells with cast times,
- less spectacular burst moments than Fire or Arcane.
Who Is the Frost Mage For?
A good fit if you …
- want a Mage with an easy start,
- like staying in control of the fight,
- love Jaina and the magic of ice.
Probably not if you …
- like big explosions and random procs, in which case Fire fits,
- want lots of movement without cast times, for example as a Beast Mastery Hunter.
Frost, Arcane or Fire?
Arcane is the planner with mana and charges, Fire lives on critical strikes. Frost is the safest and most approachable of the three.
