How It Feels
Devourer is the big news for Demon Hunters in WoW Midnight. Instead of charging into melee with warglaives and fel fire, you drain your enemies' essence from mid range and unleash beams of pure Void energy. The look shifts from green to violet, the feel from whirling blades to spellcasting on the move.
What stays typically Demon Hunter is the mobility: double jump, Glide and quick leaps are still there, and your basic spell Consume works while running. That makes Devourer a ranged spec that feels much freer than a classic caster who has to stand still for many spells.
How Devourer Works
Devourer works with Fury and Soul Fragments and builds toward a strong phase:
- Build Fury: Consume drains your target's essence, deals damage and generates Fury. You can cast it on the move.
- Void Ray: at full Fury you unleash a beam of Void energy that deals damage for a few seconds while spending Fury.
- Gather souls: Reap hurls a bolt of cosmic matter at your target and gathers nearby souls.
- Void Metamorphosis: with 50 Soul Fragments you ascend. Consume and Reap get stronger, your Fury slowly drains, and Void Ray no longer costs Fury and hits harder.
- Collapsing Star: during Metamorphosis, every 30th soul harvested unlocks a massive Void blast that hits your target and all nearby enemies.
The appeal lies in planning Fury and souls so that your Metamorphosis lasts as long and hits as hard as possible.
Key Abilities
- Consume: your basic spell, drains essence, deals Cosmic damage and generates Fury, even while moving.
- Void Ray: a beam of concentrated Void energy that spends Fury.
- Reap: a bolt of cosmic matter that gathers nearby souls.
- Void Metamorphosis: your ascended form, greatly empowering your abilities.
- Collapsing Star: a cataclysmic Void blast during Metamorphosis, strong against groups.
- Immolation Aura: engulfs you in flames and generates Fury, an ability all Demon Hunters share.
Lore: Demon Hunters and the Void
Demon Hunters are elves who, under Illidan Stormrage, absorbed demonic energy to defeat the Burning Legion with its own weapons. For that power they sacrificed their sight and became outcasts, feared by their own people.
Devourer carries that principle over to a new threat. In WoW Midnight the Void reaches for Azeroth and for the Sunwell of Quel'Thalas. Demon Hunters who once devoured fel energy now take in Void energy and turn it against its masters. That is fully in Illidan's spirit: you fight a power by making it your own, whatever the cost.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
- ranged play with a Demon Hunter's mobility,
- many abilities usable on the move,
- a strong, visible ascension phase with Void Metamorphosis,
- a fresh spec with a new look and its own fantasy.
Weaknesses
- shorter range than classic casters, so you stand closer to the action,
- leather instead of plate, less sturdy than a Death Knight or Paladin,
- as a new spec, its balance changes more often than that of established specs.
Who Is the Devourer For?
A good fit if you …
- want a ranged spec that does not have to stand still,
- love the Void, violet and cosmic magic,
- enjoy building toward a strong phase and planning resources.
Probably not if you …
- prefer melee, in which case Havoc is the right pick,
- want maximum range, for example as a Frost Mage or Marksmanship Hunter.
Devourer, Havoc or Vengeance?
With Devourer, the Demon Hunter now has three specializations. Havoc is the fast fel melee, Vengeance the mobile tank. Devourer adds a Void-wielding ranged spec to both.
