How It Feels
Vengeance is the tank for everyone who does not want to stand still. You leap into packs, tear out their souls and turn them into healing and damage. Sigils of fel fire settle on the ground, chains pull enemies together, and in an emergency you turn into a giant demon.
It feels active and mobile. While other tanks look for a fixed spot, you stay dynamic and control packs with sigils. Vengeance is still very sturdy, because Soul Fragments keep healing you.
How Vengeance Works
Vengeance combines Fury with Soul Fragments:
- Generate fragments: Fracture strikes quickly, generates Fury and shatters two Soul Fragments from your target.
- Consume fragments: Soul Cleave hits enemies in front of you and heals you, Spirit Bomb detonates fragments around you and hits whole groups.
- Keep armor up: Demon Spikes briefly raises armor and parry chance, you want it active during heavy melee damage.
- Emergencies: Fiery Brand reduces the damage you take, Metamorphosis greatly raises your health and armor.
Add sigils, which activate on the ground after a short delay and burn, hold or silence enemies.
Key Abilities
- Fracture: a quick double slash that generates Fury and shatters two Soul Fragments.
- Soul Cleave: hits all enemies in front of you, heals you and consumes Soul Fragments.
- Spirit Bomb: detonates up to five Soul Fragments in an explosion around you.
- Sigil of Flame: a sigil that burns enemies and generates Fury.
- Demon Spikes: more armor and parry chance for a few seconds.
- Fiery Brand: brands you and an enemy and greatly reduces the damage you take.
- Metamorphosis: turns you into a demon, heals you and hugely raises your armor.
Lore: Wardens of the Illidari
The Vengeance Demon Hunter also belongs to the Illidari, the followers of Illidan Stormrage. But where Havoc attacks, Vengeance stands for the side that endures. A Demon Hunter carries a bound demon within, and Vengeance uses that power to withstand suffering and turn it into strength.
The sigils trace back to the magic the Illidari use to bind and banish demons. And the souls a Vengeance Demon Hunter rips from its enemies echo the cruel methods by which Illidan once armed his warriors against the Legion.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
- a very mobile tank with double jump, Glide and leaps,
- lots of self-healing through Soul Fragments,
- strong control over packs thanks to sigils,
- very comfortable solo.
Weaknesses
- leather instead of plate, so heavy melee damage requires Demon Spikes,
- sigils activate with a short delay and need planning,
- fewer races to choose from than most classes.
Who Is the Vengeance Demon Hunter For?
A good fit if you …
- want a mobile, active tank,
- want to be sturdy and fast solo,
- love the demonic fantasy of the Illidari.
Probably not if you …
- want a classic shield tank, in which case the Protection Paladin or Protection Warrior fits better,
- prefer healing in big bursts and holding your ground, for example as a Blood Death Knight.
Vengeance, Havoc or Devourer?
Havoc is the fast melee, Devourer the new ranged spec with Void magic. Vengeance is the choice if you want to use the Demon Hunter's mobility for tanking.
