How It Feels
Protection is the textbook tank: shield on your arm, weapon in hand, straight into the pack. You leap forward, draw the attention to yourself and then simply stand your ground. Where other tanks heal themselves up, you just block the blows.
It feels direct and active. You attack almost nonstop, because every attack brings Rage, and Rage is your defense. If you like being in control and playing ahead, you will feel at home quickly.
How Protection Works
The Protection Warrior turns Rage into survival:
- Generate Rage: Shield Slam is your main attack and generates a lot of Rage. Revenge and Thunder Clap hit whole groups.
- Block melee: Shield Block blocks all melee attacks against you for a few seconds and empowers Shield Slam at the same time.
- Absorb damage: Ignore Pain costs Rage and absorbs part of incoming damage, magical damage included.
- Emergencies: Shield Wall, Last Stand and Demoralizing Shout are your big cooldowns.
The skill lies in keeping Shield Block up when heavy hits come and never letting excess Rage go to waste.
Key Abilities
- Shield Slam: your main shield attack, generates a lot of Rage and is often reset instantly by other attacks.
- Shield Block: blocks all melee attacks against you for a few seconds.
- Ignore Pain: absorbs part of the damage, paid for with Rage.
- Revenge: a wide swing that hits all enemies in front of you.
- Thunder Clap: hits all nearby enemies and slows them.
- Shield Wall: greatly reduces all damage taken, your biggest cooldown.
- Last Stand: briefly increases your maximum health and heals you for that amount.
Lore: The Shield Wall
The shield wall is one of the oldest images of war, and Azeroth has it everywhere: in the ranks of the Stormwind Guard, in the halls of Ironforge and among the orcs who send their grunts to the front. A famous frontline fighter of the Alliance is Muradin Bronzebeard, brother of the Dwarven king Magni, who always fought at the front as a Mountain King.
In Legion, Odyn gathered the Warriors in Skyhold. Whoever became leader of the Valarjar there carried the fate of an entire army. That is the Protection Warrior's fantasy: you stand in front so everyone behind you is safe.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
- very sturdy against melee damage thanks to Shield Block,
- lots of mobility for a tank with leaps and Charge,
- good control over packs with Thunder Clap and shouts,
- a direct, active playstyle without complicated healing mechanics.
Weaknesses
- hardly any self-healing, mistakes are not healed away,
- magic damage is harder to mitigate than melee hits,
- demands proactive use of cooldowns.
Who Is the Protection Warrior For?
A good fit if you …
- want to play a classic shield tank,
- like attacking actively instead of healing yourself,
- enjoy controlling packs and planning ahead.
Probably not if you …
- want an especially forgiving tank, in which case the Protection Paladin is the gentler choice,
- prefer to tank with self-healing, for example as a Blood Death Knight.
Protection, Arms or Fury?
The Warrior can tank or deal damage. Arms uses a two-hander and plays in windows, Fury dual-wields in a constant frenzy.
