How It Feels
Affliction is the Warlock who does not kill quickly, but surely. You cover enemies in curses, Corruption and Agony, let your effects do their work and watch the life drain out of them. In the end you make every effect erupt at once, and whole groups drop at the same time.
It feels calm and methodical. Instead of reacting frantically, you spread effects and keep them up. Affliction is especially strong when many enemies live long.
How Affliction Works
The Warlock uses Soul Shards as a resource:
- Apply effects: Agony grows stronger over time, Corruption deals damage over time.
- Gather Soul Shards: Agony generates Soul Shards over time.
- Unstable Affliction: spends Soul Shards and increases your damage against the target. You can stack several of them on one target.
- Erupt: Malefic Rapture makes all your effects on all targets erupt at once.
- Empower: Summon Darkglare empowers your effects over time, Haunt increases your damage on one target.
Key Abilities
- Agony: a curse that grows stronger over time.
- Corruption: corrupts the target and deals damage over time.
- Unstable Affliction: damage over time and more damage against the target, stacking up to five times.
- Malefic Rapture: makes all your effects over time erupt at once.
- Haunt: a ghostly soul that raises your damage against the target.
- Summon Darkglare: a Darkglare empowers your effects over time.
- Drain Soul: drains the target's soul, especially strong against wounded enemies.
Lore: The Art of Slow Withering
Warlocks draw their power from demons and the Twisting Nether. The most famous of them is Gul'dan, the first orc Warlock, who sold his people to the Burning Legion. Affliction stands for the insidious side of this magic: curses, plagues and soul theft.
In Legion, Affliction Warlocks carried Ulthalesh, the Deadwind Harvester, a scythe that reaps the souls of its victims. Hardly any weapon suits a Warlock who drains their enemies slowly better.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
- very strong against several enemies that live long,
- a calm, plannable playstyle,
- the Warlock's self-healing and survival tools,
- effects keep ticking while you move.
Weaknesses
- slow ramp-up, weaker against enemies that die quickly,
- keeping track of many effects at once takes practice,
- cloth, vulnerable to direct hits.
Who Is the Affliction Warlock For?
A good fit if you …
- love damage over time and curses,
- want to play calmly and methodically,
- are drawn to the dark, insidious fantasy.
Probably not if you …
- want direct, heavy hits, in which case Destruction fits,
- want to command an army of demons, in which case Demonology is the pick.
Affliction, Demonology or Destruction?
Demonology summons many demons, Destruction relies on fire and chaos. Affliction is the choice for everyone who lets enemies wither slowly.
