Which WoW Class Should I Play in Midnight? A Decision Guide

Updated:

In short

Pick your WoW class in five steps: role (tank, healer, damage), melee or ranged, favorite content, desired complexity and fantasy. If you are undecided, Paladin, Druid and Monk are ideal because they can play all three roles.

Thirteen classes, forty specializations and plenty of opinions online: picking a class in World of Warcraft can be overwhelming. This guide walks you through five steps to find a class you will still enjoy after a hundred hours. If you want the short version, jump straight into the class quiz.

The most important rule first

Play what you enjoy, not what tops the tier list right now. Balance shifts with every patch, and outside the very top of world-first competition every class is good enough. You will play a class whose fantasy and feel excite you better than one you picked for the numbers.

Step 1: Which role do you want?

WoW has three roles, and not every class can fill all of them:

  • Tank: you hold enemies and lead the group. Available to Warrior, Paladin, Death Knight, Monk, Druid and Demon Hunter. More in our guide to tank classes.
  • Healer: you keep the group alive. Available to Priest, Paladin, Shaman, Druid, Monk and Evoker. More in our guide to healer classes.
  • Damage (DPS): you make sure enemies go down. Every class can do it. Hunter, Mage, Warlock and Rogue are pure damage classes.

Tanks and healers find groups faster. If you are unsure, pick a hybrid like Paladin, Druid or Monk, which can play all three roles.

Step 2: Melee or ranged?

In melee you stand right next to the enemy but have to watch more ground mechanics. At range you have a better overview but often stand still to cast.

StyleTypical classes
MeleeWarrior, Rogue, Death Knight, Demon Hunter (Havoc), Monk (Windwalker)
RangedMage, Warlock, Hunter, Priest (Shadow), Evoker, Demon Hunter (Devourer)
BothDruid, Shaman, Hunter (Survival)

Step 3: What do you want to play?

  • Lots of solo play, quests and delves: classes with self-healing or a pet have the edge. See best solo classes.
  • Mythic+ dungeons: mobility and group utility pay off, for example with the Demon Hunter, Monk or Mage.
  • Raids: consistency and buffs that help the raid matter most.
  • PvP: crowd control and survivability are key, and the Rogue, Mage and Priest have a long PvP tradition.

Step 4: How complex can it be?

New to WoW or back after a long break? Start with a class that forgives mistakes: Hunter (Beast Mastery), Paladin, Death Knight or Demon Hunter (Havoc). Details in our guide to the easiest classes for beginners. If you want a challenge, Rogue, Monk or Druid will keep you busy for a long time.

Step 5: Which fantasy speaks to you?

In the end, gut feeling often decides. Do you want to be a holy knight, a demon summoner, a dragon or a shadow in the night? Browse the class overview and read up on the classes that appeal to you.
