How It Feels
Discipline turns healing upside down. Instead of waiting for health bars to drop, you place shields on your allies and then attack yourself. Every beam of holy light you throw at an enemy also heals your group through Atonement. You are healer and fighter in one.
It feels proactive and tactical. You read when damage is coming, prepare and then unload your attacks. When it works, it is one of the most elegant ways to heal that WoW has to offer.
How Discipline Works
Discipline heals with mana and works in waves:
- Prepare: Power Word: Shield absorbs damage and applies Atonement to the target. Power Word: Radiance heals your target and four more allies and spreads Atonement too.
- Attack: you deal damage with Penance, Smite and shadow spells. All allies with Atonement are healed for part of it.
- Targeted healing: Penance can also heal an ally directly, even on the move.
- Protect: Pain Suppression greatly reduces damage on one target, Power Word: Barrier protects a whole group on the ground.
Key Abilities
- Power Word: Shield: a shield that absorbs damage and triggers Atonement.
- Atonement: turns your spell damage into healing for all allies with Atonement.
- Penance: a volley of holy light that damages enemies or heals allies, even on the move.
- Power Word: Radiance: heals your target and four more allies and spreads Atonement.
- Pain Suppression: greatly reduces damage taken by an ally.
- Power Word: Barrier: a barrier that protects all allies in an area.
Lore: Balance Between Light and Shadow
Priests serve the Light, but Discipline stands for the insight that Light and Shadow can be two sides of the same coin. A Discipline Priest uses both and keeps the balance rather than giving in to either side.
Azeroth's priestly traditions trace back to the Church of the Holy Light and Archbishop Alonsus Faol. In Legion, Discipline Priests wielded the staff Light's Wrath as their artifact weapon. The best-known priest of recent history is Anduin Wrynn, King of Stormwind, who often shows that strength can also mean restraint.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
- prevents damage before it happens,
- more personal damage than most healers,
- strong protection tools for single targets and groups,
- an elegant, tactical playstyle.
Weaknesses
- demands planning ahead, reactive healing is weaker,
- cloth, very vulnerable to direct hits,
- unexpected damage hits you harder than reactive healers.
Who Is the Discipline Priest For?
A good fit if you …
- like planning ahead and seeing through systems,
- do not want to give up dealing damage while healing,
- love the balance of Light and Shadow.
Probably not if you …
- want an easy-to-understand first healer, in which case the Holy Priest fits,
- prefer healing sturdily in plate, for example as a Holy Paladin.
Discipline, Holy or Shadow?
Holy is the classic, reactive healer, Shadow the damage Priest with Void magic. Discipline sits in between: a healer who heals by attacking.
