How It Feels
Shadow is the Priest who stared into the abyss, and the abyss stared back. You whisper pain into your enemies' ears, drain their life and let them break under visions of the Void. Tentacles, violet lightning and a twisted form: hardly any spec is this atmospheric.
It combines effects over time with a big build-up. You keep your shadow spells running, gather Insanity and ascend into Voidform, where your damage grows considerably.
How Shadow Works
The Shadow Priest uses Insanity:
- Apply effects: Shadow Word: Pain and Vampiric Touch deal damage over time. Vampiric Touch also heals you and generates Insanity.
- Build Insanity: Mind Blast and Mind Flay generate Insanity.
- Spend Insanity: Shadow Word: Madness deals instant and lingering damage and heals you for part of it.
- Voidform: your big cooldown bombards the target with a Void Volley and raises your spell damage for a few seconds.
- Emergencies: Dispersion massively reduces damage taken and heals you, but you cannot attack during it.
Key Abilities
- Shadow Word: Pain: a word of darkness with instant and lingering damage.
- Vampiric Touch: damage over time that heals you and generates Insanity.
- Mind Blast: blasts the target's mind and generates Insanity.
- Mind Flay: channeled shadow damage that slows the target and generates Insanity.
- Shadow Word: Madness: spends Insanity on damage that also heals you.
- Voidform: twists you into a form of the Void and raises your spell damage.
- Dispersion: you disperse into shadow, take far less damage and heal yourself.
Lore: Xal'atath and the Void
Shadow Priests walk a fine line. The Void is the power of the Old Gods and their servants, and whoever uses it risks falling to it. Still, Shadow Priests seek out that power to turn it against its masters.
In Legion, Shadow Priests carried a special artifact dagger: Xal'atath, Blade of the Black Empire, a weapon with a whispering will of its own. Later Xal'atath escaped her prison and became the great antagonist of the Worldsoul Saga. In WoW Midnight the Void under her command reaches for Quel'Thalas and the Sunwell. For Shadow Priests, the circle closes.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
- a very atmospheric, dark fantasy,
- self-healing through Vampiric Touch and Shadow Word: Madness,
- strong against several targets that live longer,
- Dispersion as a strong emergency button.
Weaknesses
- cloth, vulnerable to direct hits,
- the build-up takes time, weaker against enemies that die quickly,
- some spells require standing still.
Who Is the Shadow Priest For?
A good fit if you …
- are fascinated by dark magic, madness and the Void,
- like effects over time and a big build-up,
- want to experience the story of WoW Midnight up close.
Probably not if you …
- prefer instant, direct damage, in which case a Fire Mage or Destruction Warlock fits,
- want a sturdy character.
Shadow, Holy or Discipline?
Holy is the classic healer, Discipline heals by attacking. Shadow is the choice for everyone who wants to play the Priest's dark side.
